We upgraded our printers!

originally we had 10x wanhao printers but we are replacing them all with custom all metal prusa mk3s printers. We have been able to print with 0.2mm clearance and tougher plastic such as Pollycarbonate infused with carbon fiber. Before we had to make a lot of sacrifices because of the strength and durability of the plastics that we could use, but now we can print smaller, tougher parts that will last.

We have started to design a lot of challenging mechanical prints that the other machine just couldn’t do because of build size and plastics.

The power of CNC used in escape rooms

Tick Tock escape room create as much as possible in-house. We use 3D Printers, Lazer cutters and CNC Routers. We want to create our rooms as unique as possible and having a workshop dedicated to producing props ourselves gives us a unique edge. Most escape room owners will outsource, limitations are met, and no guaranteed that their prop will be unique and sold to them only. Another problem is owners traveling around to get inspiration for their own rooms… Those who are copying the hard work of others should be ashamed of themselves.

Some of the tech we use in the room

Our escape room software has been created in house, this gives us an edge as we control the software and hardware. Most escape room owners use 3rd party software and or hardware. For example a keypad safe that locks you out after 5 failed attempts, you have to press # enter the code followed by a * because they have no control. Usually the instructions on how to use the keypad are next to the lock, and it’s frustrating when you run out of trys. Our keypad is a state machine, when you press a button it sends back a message by RF using a NRF24 module. Then when the right sequential code is received we can send another RF signal to unlock, or advance our program to the next puzzle.

We have made a lot of different types of modules that all work on NRF24, its been the most stable wireless tech for us. More stable than using wired connections. As a failback we have websocket messages after each message is sent with the NRF24 module.

After we make a module we design a case for it so that we can mount it next to the puzzle.

We use 3d printers and cad software to create these cases.

Creating 3D Objects for Escape Rooms

At our escape room’s in Toowoomba Queensland, we prefer to make everything ourselves. We have 10 3D Printers, a CNC Machine and a lot of other tools in an offsite workshop. Below is a gauge that we designed for our Chernobyl room *now discontinued* We have come a long way since then and our painting techniques have improved. When we do escape rooms ourselves we have noticed, the best rooms are from independent creative owners. And the worst experiences are usually from escape room owners that care more about margins than creativity. When owners buy pre-made mass produced props and puzzles. They may look good and function but when you start seeing them all over the place it does nothing to advance the industry.

Hitachi RFID Cassette player

We needed a smart retro cassette player for room 204

We design all our puzzles here at Tick Tock Escape Room Toowoomba Queensland. Room 204 we needed a cassette tape player that would play different recordings and most importantly that each recording that was used would notify our server when played. So we searched for a cassette player. We found one on ebay that suited the theme of the room then we installed a RFID card reader and arduino inside with a RF Module. Each button press then had to have a micro switch installed so that it would function like the original just not with analog tapes.
